Keeping Duke at the forefront of economics

Duke University consistently ranks in the top five best colleges for undergraduates studying economics.

From 2013-2018, an average of 80.8% of Duke economics undergraduates accepted full-time jobs by graduation.

In 2019, Duke is ranked number two only behind Harvard. A major part of that continued success is due to economics majors at Duke learning from esteemed faculty like Patrick Bayer, the newly named Gilhuly Family Professor in Economics. Bayer, an exceptional scholar and teacher, was retained at Duke by the generosity of trustee Ned Gilhuly ’82 and his wife, Karen P’13, P’17, P’18, whose gift supports faculty excellence in the economics department of Trinity College of Arts & Sciences.

Valerie Ashby, dean of Trinity College, calls Bayer a “game changer” for how his work is elevating economics at Duke. Bayer and his colleagues offer broader perspectives in the social sciences across an array of academic disciplines — leading to superior student outcomes post-graduation. His research focuses on racial inequality and segregation, social interactions, housing markets, education and crime.
