Courage and identity through dance with Duke Performances
When The New York Times called Camille A. Brown “a force of nature,” it wasn’t kidding.
Her dance company Camille A. Brown & Dancers explores multiple aspects of black existence through sequence of motion and form.
During the 2018/2019 season, Duke Performances became the first presenter to stage Brown’s entire trilogy on black identity over the course of a single season. Leading up to each of these performances, Brown and her dancers took part in a variety of engagements, including: dance classes, public conversations, social dance events, and visits to Duke classrooms — providing the Duke campus an opportunity to explore, in a deep and sustained way, the work of this visionary artist at the vanguard of American dance.
