Marine Lab donors step up to repair and refurbish hurricane damage

In the fall of 2018, Hurricane Florence damaged almost a dozen buildings at the Duke Marine Lab, but a duo of gifts will help it get squared away again.

Student research opportunities at the Marine Lab could be used to aid in recovery efforts from Hurricane Florence and inform how other communities can deal with the effects of similar storms in the future.

A $1,015,000 gift from The Grainger Family will support needed improvements to the classrooms and other student areas following the storm. An $805,000 gift from Nicholas School of the Environment Board of Visitors Chair Barbara Smit ’79 and Neil Smit ’80 will replace the dock that was damaged by the hurricane and support Duke’s new research vessel.
