Mentoring makes a future physician assistant’s path clear

For Melanie Rogers, a student in the Duke Physician Assistant Program, becoming a health care professional was her dream career path ever since a pediatrician provided vital care for her when she was a child in foster care.

Now at Duke, she is a recipient of a scholarship from the University Scholars Program, which is helping to pave her path forward in health care.

In appreciation of everything her mentors have done to propel her forward, Rogers mentors children in foster care communities to provide guidance so they can achieve their goals. Duke is transforming Rogers’ wishes to provide care for others into a reality.

“Duke made it possible for me to help students who need that little extra guidance to push their careers forward,” she said.
