Retired Marine colonel reveals cancer-fighting tactics

When Bob List, a retired colonel, was diagnosed with cancer, he immediately began to research the enemy threatening to take his life.

I want people to know they can beat cancer and continue to do the things they love in life. They just need to believe in themselves.

— Bob List, prostate cancer survivor

For more than 26 years, List’s focus was to lead his men in tactical planning. Now he had to devise a plan of attack against an adversary as dangerous as any he had faced on the battlefield; to defeat cancer, he needed a weapon as adaptive and multiform as the disease itself.

In My Duke Cancer Story videos, List is one of dozens of patients who have been or are being treated for cancer and who agreed to tell the story of how cancer care, research or clinical trials at Duke has affected their life. Gifts to Duke Cancer Institute enable continued world-class cancer care like these patients experienced.
